Guys, Max spent ten years on the run, completely alone, constantly fighting life-or-death battles, constantly undercover, becoming an extremely competent cat burglar to provide for herself and defeating highly trained operatives at every turn to keep herself free.

Alec spends the same amount of time safely locked away, being brainwashed and doing drills.

What factor of this--besides misogyny--can even remotely be interpreted to mean 'oh yeah, he is totally and obviously so much better than her!' You know, besides one throwaway comment from a biased source whose ass Max kicks in a later episode.


To think that, after spending a great deal of time immersed in this fandom, I managed to emerge largely intact as a feminist before I even knew what a feminist was. I must have been raised right.

Dark Angel related: someone tried to come on my LJ and explain to me that Max is obviously weaker than Alec.

I...god, how misaimed can you be? Unlike meganbmoore, who tolerates intrusions along these lines with dignity and grace, I tried to keep my cool but in the end lost it. Anyone who has read my LJ--and this was an old post--knows that I have long since discarded the fanon opinion that Alec is god because he's hot and Max is a bitch and inferior because she doesn't worship him.

Possibly I was less neutral than I could have been. This is a bad button to push with me, guys. Baaaaaad. I DON'T RESPOND WELL TO IT.

Oh man, I'd forgotten how madly I love this show. Max! Asha! Logan! KENDRA! ORIGINAL CINDY! HERBAL THOUGHT! I usually want to flush Sketchy down the drain, though.

I wondered why Alec acted so--well, mildly irritated but not at all expecting real trouble--in the scene in Logan's apartment after she gets the gun away and realized; she'd just been tortured and run all the way to Seattle, and he knew it, and I nearly laughed out loud. She pretty much kicked his ass anyway, of course. And people try to say Max is obviously weaker.

Also: does anyone know the origin of that whole saying about the canary in the mine or whatever? And, for that matter, what it's supposed to mean? What does a canary do in a mine?

Went back through my 'Dark Angel' tags with a vengeance, seeking to prune out OOCness and shoddy writing. (mostly on Lj)

Yes, that means nearly everything had to go.

Dark Angel fandom was the first one I entered, and I entered it partway before I even watched the show through a bizarre contortion of events. This means it influenced me. It didn't manage to make me dislike Max, though it tried, but it did manage to skew my perception of Alec somehow. Now that I've grown beyond it--thank god--I can recognize the huge, gaping, ghastly flaws OMG THEY WERE AWFUL. Alec had little to no resemblance to the actual character, the writing was trite and silly, etc.

I left Faith Through Midnight up just for nostalgia, but I cringe every time I glance at it. I may have to pull it off FF.net.
