Vampire Hunter D
Vampire Hunter D!
I'd started the books (or the first one, anyway) some time ago and been enamoured, but my time is swallowed up like quicksand since I have no self-control, no time management and a lot of homework.
I don't think the writing style is necessarily for everyone. I love it. I actually like the reticent hero quite a bit, think the movies don't measure up (as always) though they're pretty good on their own merit, and adore Doris.
Yes, that is totally the way to hire a bodyguard, Doris! Though she has to be rescued more than once, never once is her competence called into question. She's clearly a tough, fierce and intelligent young lady who is also a CERTIFIED BADASS but is simply up against opponents a little beyond her calibre. Oh Hideyuki Kikuchi, so kind to me.
I nearly passed out with joy when I learned there were twenty books, and eleven translated--though Doris probably won't be in more than one (this is not spoilery, just my assumption)--hopefully we'll get other heroines at least half as awesome as she is.
Just recently I was griping to myself about the poor and intrusive illustrations of Lilith's Saintcrow's Steelflower. Vampire Hunter D has illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano Can we say fangasm? Can we say it again for good measure?
In other news, I brought far too many textbooks to school today. My shoulders hurt.
