On Hating Female Characters.

For a while now I’ve been thinking about how many readers seem to hate female characters more than they hate male. Or rather that the same behaviour from a male character is okay but someone inexcusable in a female.

NO KIDDING. I read and enjoyed this post a while back, but a link popped up on my flist, and I returned to it and decided in light of some recent comments I'd read that it needs to be sung from the rooftops.

She also has a very good post here: The Advantages of Being a White Writer Highly recommended.

Oh, look, she's all about Boodith too. The thieving piece of trash really is like sand.
Chances she wrote a magical farm in upstate NY for inhuman-looking paranormal critters as a response to Boodith just went up exponentially. Fuck.
Boodith?
Cassie Cla(i)re, the plagiarist/collage artist with god-awful plothole-riddled hamfisted-foreshadowed urpleicious prose to rival Meyer's.

This actually throws my reading of Liar into a whole 'nother light. If the upstate farm for non-humans in Liar is a nod to JL's best-loved writerly buddeh Clare and not an allusion to the graphic novel Fables, which Clare stole a number of points from (including said farm), then things change greatly.
Oh, bleurgh. Didn't notice that bit.
Don't think I brought it up (because I don't like talking about her, she depresses me) but I had two younger readers within a week tell me that Clare ripped Meyer off, even.
I...I can't muster up sympathy for her, since she in turn ripped off others. The most I can come up with is, 'scraping the bottom of the barrel, isn't she?' And deep contempt.
This is both why I need to finish a book and why I keep holding myself back--because the YA section is a gigantic incestuous circle-jerk & because I'm ashamed of it.
